UDI: The Key to Improving Supply Chain Efficiency and Resiliency

Today’s supply chain professionals are overwhelmed by competing demands. They are challenged to improve daily operations while simultaneously innovating and creating the supply chain of the future. Adopting and maximizing the use of the UDI is key to meeting both challenges. In this session participants will learn how manufacturers and providers can work together to incorporate the UDI into their EDI transaction sets and reduce errors and improve efficiency for everyone. They will also learn specific ways UDI usage benefits manufacturers and how it can improve inventory management and facilitate barcode scanning at the point of care for providers. Additionally they will learn how combined these usages will improve recall management and provide the data necessary to create a more resilient supply chain.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn the benefits of including the UDI and Location Identifiers in their EDI transaction sets and will be able to develop a plan to include or expand usage within their organizations.
  2. Participants will understand how inclusion of the UDI in inventory management and barcode scanning at the point of care goes beyond improving patient care and provides the data necessary to position their organization for the future.
  3. Participants will be able to explain to their leadership how including the UDI in their item master and using it in transaction sets is foundational and supports the organization’s ability to scan at the point of care and capture information that will improve the organization’s performance.

Interoperability is a term mentioned frequently within health care, but what does it mean relative to the UDI? In this session, experts representing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Electronic Health Records (EHR) third-party software applications and data platforms will discuss how to maximize the functionality within and between their systems to unlock the UDI’s full potential. They will answer questions submitted as part of a pre-forum questionnaire and share how they envision the future.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to create a gap analysis between their current use of ERP and EHR functionality to support the UDI and these system’s current capabilities.
  2. Participants will be able to explain how third-party software applications and data platforms can enhance and expand functionality related to UDI adoption and utilization.
  3. Participants will be able to describe the future state of interoperability and how that will impact their organization.
